all great answers... paul newman was great in "nobody's fool" and connery always a pleasure, I'd add cary grant not only for his hitcock turns but his comedies(bringing up baby/arsenic and old lace), jimmy stewart in his capra/hitcock -it's a wonderful life and harvey, fonda has grapes of wrath and anything else, George C. Scott in Patton, love Errol Flynn swashbucklers, not to mention other Irish hoofers Gene Kelly and James Cagney (1,2,3, Ragtime, and George M. Cohan) but have to finally say Gary Cooper due to yet another capra great Meet John Doe (helped by walter brennan hollering about "healots" and barbara stanwyck), Sgt York, and the sheriff (married and dissed by grace kelly) in High Noon.

Charlton Heston, definitely, in his career he has starred in
everything from "Ben-Hur" 10 commandments, and even
science fiction, Planet of the Apes, and the wonderful
futuristic, scary "Soylent Green" Mr.Heston gets my vote.
