Wally's Cafe on Mass Ave (at the corner of Tremont and Mass, next door to the New York Pizza) is the BEST and ONLY place for jazz in Boston. It's a great dive bar with a truly diverse crowd (it's rare you see that at Boston bars/clubs/etc.). The musicians are great, with a lot of up-and-coming young talent from Berklee.

The best Jazz Club, isn't actually downtown, but just outside of the city in the Cambridge/Somerville area. It's called Ryles, and they have great jazz music and delicious BBQ! Make sure to check it out, it's about a 10 minute cab ride away if you're staying downtown.

If you go to the Boston Globe Web site you can get a list of who is performing at several clubs and phone numbers and web sites. Go to www.boston.com/ae/music/ and select Jazz under "Event Type"
There are several that are popular (also in Cambridge):
Boston Harbor Hotel has jazz outdoors
Scullers Jazz Club, Doubletree Guest Suites;
Ryles Jazz Club, Inman Square, Cambridge
Regattabar, Charles Hotel, Harvard Square, Cambridge

Yeah Nina! Wally's is the best! Not only do you get the kids from the school, but it's the kind of place that the legends will drop in to and maybe jam for a bit when they're in town. It's the real deal.

I personally love jazz but am not familiar with that area. Try BostonJazz.net to find some information on this.

See if Storyville is still in existance. It was a mecca in the '50s and '60s.
