There was a beggar that stood at the gates of King Arthur's palace in England. The Gritty Bad Man stole objects of art and hide them in a cavern. The beggar followed the bad man and recovered these and was much rewarded.
Here's your start.

You could always go with the general fairy tale genre where the beggar (who is really a princess in disguise) must complete three tasks in a cavern to save the prince from the gritty bad man. That kind of thing. Good luck

Well, think of a movie you might have seen - a few come to mind that have all of these elements.
Cavern for dwelling, hiding, beggars usually were put in the dungeon, there was always the "bad man" who was the ruler, and in those days, thieves were abundant.
Have you seen Conan? Have you seen the movie (the name escapes me) with Matthew Broadrick, Michelle Pfiefer and Rutger Howard, where Matthew was the thief/beggar and Michelle was an eagle half of the day, and Rutger was a black lion/tiger half of the day - star crossed lovers. Medieval times, and how a ruler/king had a wizard make the star-crossed lovers live in agony only seeing each other at dawn, dusk for moments. Great movie, I just don't remember the name.
