Society. What does that word conjur up- collective, club, inclusion, general mass, togetherness, belonging, culture.
I have a desire to be beneficial to the society i wish to see realized and in doing so i realize that society is nothing more than the sum of our 6 billion individual societies. Some may be in isolation but even stories of their isolation affect others and so the whole so no man is an island.
Some people realize that we are all one, that everything we do affects others and through this try to live the best lives they can in order to greatly benefit others. Others however, are more individuated in a negative way and focus on themselves. Criminals are these.
I have a desire to live my own social rules that through inspiration to others it may be translated into the mass notion of society and thus improve the lot. To do this i have a 3 pronged attack;
1. Speak as the common folk do, think as the wise ones think but feel as only yourself can. in this way we live as best we can free from the lowest common denominators of society. We can reach for moral sainthood if we so wish and are able to create better values outside the norm which can enhance the norm through action.
2. Demonstrate your life. BE the change you wish to see in the world so as to create a courage in others that they too can attain this sainthood. We can all be heroes. There is no greater hero or villain in your life than you. Choice is what makes you a good or bad person.
3. Stretch to do good. Reach the furthest you can. The further you throw the stone of kindness into the lake of life, the more resounbding the ripples. In this arena i have chosen after years of trying to benefit my local community to greater benefit more suffering regions of the world. In this context i will find myself even more than i have now and realize the power in myself to change the world.
In these things there is NOTHING i can do that you cant, there is no goodness in me that is not in you waiting to be realized (and darkness). My benefit to society is to show its component parts (people) the darkness in their apathy and the brightness in the fact that what i can do you can do a thousand times better. And in this way we can make a better world.
LEt the first single stone be cast not in sin and that one single stone can some day create an avalanche of kindness and love, to scrape clean the pinnacles of our pain and fill deep the despair in our hearts.
And throw the first stone in your own self before you see it gather into an avalanche within. A simple smile to a down and out, a coin to a homeless bum, a warm blanket to a street urchin. Simple tiny pebbles which gather into a storm of compassion. Do it RIGHT NOW. Go and randomly make a cup of tea for the person in your house and put them in a mood to further be kind to others, or do two weekly shoppings this week if you can and give one of them to a poor person randomly at a souphouse or nightshelter. Its these small things that give you the courage to make your life change to help other lives change to help society change. Some day i will spill the avalanche of my own values and beliefs on the world and with hope and kindness a new and better value of society can develop. It is only through this courage and the appreciation of small acts of goodness that we can benefit society.
With the love and kindness of this message and answer i place in your mind's hand a tiny pebble free of sin for you to cast. But cast it not with your mind, nor with your body or your heart even. Cast it in goodness with your whole self and surely enough your whole self may soon follow.

Yes, I think I do. It's rather difficult for me to understand why I care and yet I do. It seems easier to just float along in life and concern myself with more self beneficial pursuits, still that's not what I end up doing. I think it's the small changes that I can effect that may give the greatest return. A moment of my time, a kindness to some one I don't know; a few dollars in support of a needy cause. Little things in their own right but what they become once I'm removed from the equation is interesting. It ripples outward even after I'm gone. I know this, I've needed before and folks that had no reason to help me did. It's those people's ripples that are carried by me, and now I do it too. So onward it goes, threw me and untold millions of others; effects that will not finish playing out for centuries; but growing over time to perhaps touch every soul on the planet one day. If everyone cared a bit about everyone else this could be a heck of a planet. Jeez, it"s already great; and it's not like anyone has to put in a lot of effort to make it better yet. Simple caring and acting on that, once in a while. It's going to happen, chances are it already has.

We are all a contributing member of society...even when we are not conscious of it. I often notice that many perceive 'Society ' as something separate from themselves...when in reality, the collective "we" comprise society. How we contribute or what we contribute often becomes a matter of opinion.

I have a real desire to improve the world through my good thought of it, by encouraging others to do the same, and I honestly believe we are all very important components...one not being more important than another. How we are perceived while doing it is another matter. I believe we must take responsibility for how we are perceived...and if we don't like it; we must change it. This presents the greater challenge to me.

As an atheist i do no longer believe that any god needs everybody to do something and the basically aspect you may choose a faith on is the behaviour of the non secular. This has no longer been helpful to society. i'm no longer positive the way it really is inappropriate. If someone blows you up because of their interpretation of a god, might want to you be a lot less lifeless because the translation became incorrect?

I like to think of each person's mind as a universe of thought, feelings, and ideas. I believe that by lifting even one soul, taking away despair or giving hope at any level, I unleash an entire universe of potential upon the world ..... If I can lift a handful? If I can inspire hundreds? Thousands?

..... Imagine how we can impact the world! Will we save it? Who knows ...... But our influence upon society will not be forgotten.

..... So yes, I wish to benefit society. I wish to do it in the company of those who love deeply, and who won't shun a worthy fight.

depends on the society

if its a murderous and suicidal society like the one we live in now, I don't care so much to be beneficial to society

I certainly want to be beneficial to individual humans in the society though as well as other life forms

Yea, I do. I feel like if I do become beneficial to the society, I get something in return. :) It'll happen to you, I'm sure.

That's one of the reasons I spend time on Yahoo answers. I like being challenged with serious questions about faith and politics, but the best is when someone has a real personal issue that I get to help them out with.

Yes, it started fairly recently. Before that I admit I was an egomaniac, I didn't care for anyone other than myself. Once I took care of myself and understood my own self-worth a thirst to help others began to develop...
