How to draw a perpendicular from a point on a given line?not on the line?

Using a compass, sketch a small arc to each side of the line from point A. Do the same from a point B so that the two arcs intersect on either side. Draw a line through those intersections and your new line will be perpendicular to the original line.

Is this your geometry homework?
"Perpendicular" means two lines that cross at exactly 90 degrees, like the letter T.
This is in contrast to the term "Parallel", which means two lines that run side by side, never crossing, like the double yellow lines in the road, for example.
