Did I miss something or what? I know girls who will tell everyone about their period, including boys who are virtually complete strangers! They will just go up to them and start talking about their period! Did I miss something? I thought it was meant to be a taboo, private subject! I mean we are talking about the most private personal thing that could ever happen to a female! They are meant to be private! When did it become acceptable to tell boys who are virtually strangers about the most private thing that could possibly happen to a girl?

Why should I be ashamed of being female? Not so long ago it was taboo for women to appear in public when they were pregnant, much less discuss pregnancy. Now we celebrate it - complete strangers think nothing of touching the bellies of pregnant women (not that I think we should have gone that far).

The menstrual cycle is part of being a woman. Everyone knows it happens. Pretending it doesn't benefits no one. Understanding and acceptance only come through knowledge. (Boy, does it sound like that came from a fortune cookie, or what?) My point is, if you don't want to talk about it, don't. I generally don't with people I don't know well, but I'm old enough to still have that taboo ingrained. If someone else is comfortable enough with her body to talk, more power to her. If you're uncomfortable hearing it, leave, or let her know, politely, that you're uncomfortable with the subject.

And by the way, having a period is nowhere near the most private thing that could happen to a girl. Sex is way more intimate. Tell me about your cramps, fine, but I sure don't want the details about what a complete stranger did with her boyfriend last night. Now THAT'S private.

How can it be taboo if there are 50 kotex and tampon commercials a day?

Time for you to grow up.

I completely agree with you. I'm a girl, btw, and I think its worse when girls come up and tell you about their birth control/gyn exams and expect you to share your personal life with them.

When women stopped being embarrassed about having something they can't control.
