I have two questions for you: (1) About how much time outside of the classroom do you spend preparing for class and grading papers? (2) What, in your experience, are the biggest challenges of teaching this grade level?

1. Less time as years of experience increase. I would estimate that outside of my 8:10 - 3:25 day, I spend about ten hours average on those things you mention. Although "planning time" is hard to measure because it's not like I keep a stopwatch with me while I think of lessons and strategies that I think will work. I do that any waking time of day.
2. I teach 8th grade and the kids are by and large terrific to work with; I would say that the biggest challenge I have right now is maintaining a positive attitude despite the remarkably inept (so-called) administrators that have progressively run our school into the ground -- what used to be a dream job for me is more like a daily nightmare. But I don't think I'll be staying much longer... ;)

I teach high school, FYI.

Outside of the school day, I spend at least an hour a night and a couple of hours on the weekend correcting and planning. I typically outline my objectives for the year on a rough sketch during the summer and plan the first two weeks of school in late August. It's definitely worth keeping up with it. Spending a weekend grading month-old tests is a drag.

The biggest challenges at this level is keeping up your knowledge. Kids are getting more knowledgable and more willing to question teachers (in positive, curious ways). If you're unsure of what you're teaching, they'll eat you alive.

Best wishes.

A good part of my weekend goes to preparing and grading. I do want to keep most of my grading at work this year and not briing any home. The biggest challenges of my grade level (6th- 8th grade) must be the changes the students are going through. They are learning to take responsibility and becoming an individual. It is a tough time to be a kid!

On the average, 2 hours per day.

Challenges? Probably the diverse ability levels of the different students in each class. There are those who catch on quickly and tend to get bored by those who need more time teaching the concept and repetition of the material.

Outside of class-little as far as once I leave, almost none. Of course I usually leave 5:00-6:00.
Kids are great and things that most would call challenging I find entertaining. Parents!!

i might want to also get a pencil bag, yet there is not a lot else you want to deliver. make sure that your backpack is user-friendly as might want to be, because because it receives messy, it starts to weigh more beneficial. sixth Grade turned right into a lot less puzzling for me than fifth grade. do not worry too a lot. that they had a ton of socials at my center college, which makes it a lot less puzzling to fulfill youngsters from different colleges. via ways... the eighth graders are not so undesirable... a minimum of maximum of them. So, anyhow, solid success with sixth grade.
