A dental hyginist course is a short (18 month) course that prepares someone to work under the supervision of a dentist. It is a "technical" degree.

A dentist goes to college and majors in something like Biology. They take a test called the Dental Admissions Test to see if they are qualified to go to dental school which is another 4 years of school. The D.D.S. degree is a "professional" degree and is a doctorate degree, similar to a M.D.
