The printer uses a stepper motor and counts the steps so that it knows where the print head is at all times. The print head has a certain number of holes, maybe 32, that can each squirt ink in a specific location. When the print head has moved to a spot that needs ink to create the letter or picture you desire it squirts ink from one or more of the holes to create a very small part of your picture.
