When ever I go shopping to a clothing store or department store and I make a purchase they ask for my zip code or phone number. Sometimes (more often than not) they ask for both. I find this just about anywere in the U.S. or Canada.

I have noticed this happens more at "higher end" priced stores like Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Macys, Abercrombie and the like. Never happens at discount stores like Target of Wal Mart. It's mostly clothes stores, but it does sometimes happen at other higher end stores (Home Outfitters, ect).

What's the reason for this?

it is as form of customer service survey. The store is finding out where people are coming from to shop. If they find out thar a lot of people are coming from a certain area then they may consider opening new stores in other areas

They do this to track what zip codes are frequenting their stores so they know where to send coupons and things. That's the same reason why they ask for your phone number too. If your number is not in the phone book though, you will not receive anything. It's the same thing when you have one of those cards from like a grocery store. Everyone may receive the same store circular but depending on what you buy more often the pages might be different. Like you may have more party food (chips. sodas, snacks) on your front page and if I buy more fruit and things, that will be on the front page of my circular. It's just how they can market to the customer better.

With your zip they can tell where most of their business is coming from. As far as a phone # they probably sell that list.

Around my way its used for market research, so they can target the right products to that particular local market.

This is part of their marketing ploy. They want to know where they're loyal shoppers are from and can better target their "ideal" consumer.

It helps them target their advertising money.

I don't mind giving my ZIP but I never give my phone or social.

They are tracking their customer demographics. You have the right to say "No" to their request, and I often do.
