Mariska Hargitary{Olivia Benson-L/Ord/SVU} has not really left the show.
On episode 158-entitled Fault/ April/04/2006 -Season 7 Benson & Stabler(Chris Meloni) go after a released sex offender who has kidnapped 2 children. They corner him at a train station, where he killed 1 child & Olivia got up close to him to rescue the other child. She put herself in his grip & the child was let go.
When he got her, he tried to make a deal, so as he could leave, but she would not agree to it, but Elliot Stabler wanted to do so. As a result the sicko, Paul Gitano played by Lou Diamond Phillips slashes her throat, so she requests a transfer from the unit because of her & Stabler's dissagreenent on the issue. She goes to the Internet Database Unit which tracks all kinds of criminals.
In actuallity she was pregnet in real life & wanted to keep working & to keep her pregency from showing, she stays in the I.D.B. unit, untill her son is born on June/28/2006, & then when she returns to L/ORD. she goes back to S.V.U.
A personal bit of info on M.Hargitary: She is the daughter of Jane Mansfield{Killed by a tractor trailor on June/29/1967.}( Mariska & 2 of her brothers were in the car, but they were lying down asleep & never got hurt. ) & Mikey Hargitary, a former Mr. Universe.
Mariska speaks 3 languages fluently:
Hungarian--Her father's native tongue.
French & Italian.
She married to Peter Hermann whom she met on L/ORD./SVU.

In the last episode of the last season, she got shot, but it wasn't deadly(thankfully) But in real life she was pregnant and gave birth to a beutiful baby boy. I have read a lot of articals saying how cute her baby boy is and how much "olivia" misses being on the show, and she will be back this season. Hope this helped

She just gave birth to a very large baby boy. So she is taking some time off to be with him. From what I have read, she will be back. She loves doing the show. I, personally, can't wait for her return.

in real life. Olivia was having a baby, on the last show she was shot. she will be back on the new shows
