I am interested in having an artist draw a picture for me. However I would like to know what the going cost for a 4x4, black and white photo would be? I am realy concerned with how much I would be charged by buying the rights to the art work as I would like to have it reproduced....and own the rights to the drawing.... Please help. Thanks

It depends on the artist -- I would say anywhere from $30 to $200.
Ask for an itemized estimate with their hourly rate, if applicable. The main charges will be:
- hours it takes to draw
- materials
(Might be better if they do a flat fee until you are satisfied.)
If it is a professional studio or artist, get something in writing that shows that you own the copyright or license to the final work. That way you will be free to reproduce and distribute it as you wish.

I would do it but it would have to be in good taste, no nudes and nothing that could be deemed as anti-Christain. I am concerned, as any professional artist would be, about your owning the rights. That doesn't mean I won't do it, it just means that I would want to know what you have in mind for reproduction and it is an intelligent question: are you going to make money off the reproductions? With a little more info I may consider helping. How much do you want to pay? Are you offering any royalties what-so-ever?
You can see my artwork at http://savageartworks.com . I don't know if that e-mail link is working so you should e-mail me at wayne@savageartworks.com through your yahoo e-mail or click on what-ever pic I have with my answer (it changes frequently). Why is an artist concerned over you owning rights? because many artworks have been used to make hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions and the artist got enough for a carwash. But I'm reasonable if you are too. But whatever, good luck!

Why do people always want to take from artists and not have to pay for it?
As soon as pencil hits paper, the artist automatically owns the copyright to the material they are producing, per the copyright law of 1977. If you want to own the rights to the art, they will have to 'grant' you those rights. you will have to come to an agreement with the artist, and depending on how professional they are, you may need to sign a contract. Owning rights to artwork and reproduction rights is ALWAYS going to cost more. The cost will depend on who you go to for the art.
If you ask my opinion, making a drawing from a photo is kind of a cop out...it never looks all that good. Why not sit as a model for an artist instead? Drawings from photos always look stale, and they underutilize the abilities of a good artist.

im not a professional artist but im pretty good ill take a look at the pic and if its worht the time ill redraw it for next to nothing (i really dont care what you do with it after that)hows 35$ sound? get back to me if your interested. just to let you know when i said im not a professional artist that says nothing about my ability with a pen or pencil im really quite good(trying to say this without sounding full of your self is very hard.) any way if you want i can email you some of the pictures ive drawn to see if its what your looking for. oh and by the way the 35$ offer still stands, and of course the rights to the drawing would be yours to do whatever you want with it.

Take a picture of yourself and open it in photo shop or a smiliar digital imaging program and use one of the filters to create a picture of you that looks like a drawing or painting. Then take it to Kinko's and they will blow it up for. you. Then that way you don't have to pay anyone rights for it.
