That's a pretty GENERAL or somewhat VAGUE question, as you're not saying what year, make and model of DRAG CAR you have.

But other then that part it's a matter of preference and dependability.

If you're at the starting lights and your alternator fails you lets say - you are SOL as it were! YOU LOSE! Maybe - maybe not? Want to chance that? Not me!

If you always want to get a good run in, without something nickel & dime failing, then you go with dependability or namely a MAGNETO! All engine failures aside here, as we're talking SPARK FIRE! NO SPARK FIRE - NO NOTHING as it were!

If your DRAG CAR is just that, as in NON STREET LEGAL, and always trailered and only run at the drag strip then YES a MAGNETO is first choice, as all you need is power to the FIREBOX or COIL as it were. And a 1/4 mile goes by quite fast and it's over, so no harm done to the battery!

Street modified cars with only CAT BACKS, computer tweaker chip changes, and minor changes/mods to the injection and head porting and polishing really don't count as being called DRAG CARS as they are not even close!

Carbureted MUSCLE CARS of the 60's and early 70's are!

Again - it's winning or losing at the starting line! Your choice......

On average, every 100lbs shaved off the vehicle is about a tenth (0.10) of a second.
Dump the power steering and the alternator.
A good gel cel battery will get you to the line down the strip and back to the garage for about 5 runs or so, between charge.
Have fun.

I would leave it off. I ran a stock car without an alternator & a good battery would run an easy hour with power to spare.

Depends on your setup, If your Dizzy needs more power then the battery can provide alone you will need to run one. Like someone else said, try it both ways. Your not going to pick up enough to make it worth going through the trouble of charging the batt all the time though.

run with an alternator, but try putting a cut off switch on the Hot wire (+) and turn it off right before you race Its good to keep a source of power charging in case you were to stall it out.

no, less weight more power. all you need is a strong battery youre only going 1/4 mile. there is alot you can strip off to make it lighter.
