It seems to be similar to an obsession, rather more than mere shallowness. Being bombarded with images of "perfection" can be concievably combined with any preexisting mental condition into anorexia or another eating disorder.

Someone genuinely wanting to look better would probably rather use a combination of an exercise regimen and healthier eating habits, rather than merely less.

Anorexics start out as normal people who want to lose weight. They usually have low self esteem and they think that if they lose weight, they will feel better about themselves and that people will like them more. Sometimes, the obsession fades, sometimes it continues and they become true anorexics. They become perfectionist. They feel that they're worthless and they don't deserve to live, therefore they don't deserve to eat. It's all in the mind. Their mind won't let them see them the way other people do. They don't see skinny, they see fat because that's what they want to see. That's what their minds are telling them, that they're no good.

Perfectionist state of mind and the need to have control over their life.

Anorexia is caused by society and the media's, constant beratement of young impressionable males and females, and their push to have a 'beautiful society', if there was no pressure from the media or society for everyone to have to be stick figure supermodels, anorexia would not even exist.

Anorexia is an eating disorder...Girls often see the models' bodies that are way too skinny and that makes them think that they're fat...So i think it's also a mental thing cos even if you're SKINNY you continue to consider yourself FAT...
thats not just "wanting to look better"....its a lot more than this!!!

it would take an extremely devoted person to be anorexic over just wanting to look good. it would have to start in the mind. it is hard to develop a condition over night like perfectionism, that is a thing that is developed over time like many other disorders than to already have it affecting you. people become anorexic because it is also a control issue. they feel the only thing in their life they can control is their weight or how they eat. it becomes obssesive.

Both can contribute. There are many things that contribute to anorexia. Being self conscious is just the begining.

i would say both. having a need to control everything around them is strong. also having low self esteem, and a low sense of self can lead someone in the direction of having an eating disorder. when the person feels that they can not control all aspects of their life, (it's impossible to control everything!) they turn to the one thing they can control; their bodies and what they put into it. (or don't!!) some go as far as adding exercise to the mix.

Both. Anorexia occurs because the individual views themselves as fat. And they feel that the whole world sees them that way. So to become the perfect Barbie doll they starve themselves to reach that goal. And when they reach the goal they don't realize because their view of themselves is distorted.
