1. Do sufficient warm up exercises before getting into the pool. It helps to prevent the cramps.
2. Begin your learning in a shallow pool, or at least the shallow end of the pool, since you are afraid of water.
3. Use a polyfoam board (if available) to provide your upper body with flotation support.
4. Stay close to the pool's edge at the beginning to build up your confidence in water. Progressively venture out in subsequent sessions.
5. Start practising your breathing by submerging your face (not your entire head) in water after taking a deep breath. Slowly release your breath through your Nose (not mouth) and at the end of it recover from the water. Repeat for a few more times to get used to this new breathing method.
Last but not least, take it easy and have fun with your guy. Swimming is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable activity. Bear this in mind and you'll be able to sustain your interest. That should be more than enough to learn at your first swimming class.

That is great that your man is encouraging you. It is something you should really know how to do for your own safety. Easier said than done but TRY not to be so afraid. If you panic that is when you can have trouble. Remember that you have total control over whether you put yourself underwater or not. You can go down and come up as you please. You ARE in control so remember that. Get some goggles too. I am a great swimmer but I still hate the feel of opening my eyes underwater. Just take your time. Learning the basics (treading water, floating, swimming, etc.) will come with practice I promise. And once you get it you will see its not so tough. Your instructor should be helpful but if you feel VERY uncomfortable or unsafe, speak up. You will do fine. Have confidence in yourself and you will be a dolphin in no time

in basic terms because of the fact you by no skill took instructions, would not advise you're no longer a good swimmer. in case you ever settle directly to bypass into underwater welding, undergo in thoughts, whilst they pump heated sea water into your suit and by twist of destiny suck up a jellyfish and pump it into your suit, you'll want you chosen yet another line of paintings. actual, all kidding aside, fins are somewhat an remarkable thank you to propel your self with the aid of water whether you're no longer the ideal swimmer. Scuba and snorkeling is so non violent and spectacular. in basic terms spectacular. You choose for it. you would be in basic terms advantageous. good success and characteristic exciting. :)

Get your technique down before you worry about speed and it doesn't come overnight. I've trained with the rescue swimmers in the Coast guard so......

You want to conquer your fear. Water is not going to hurt you. It's actually you that is making yourself scared. Just take a little at a time.
