2 of my mates met their long term partners through online dating sites. One is getting married next month after 2 and a half years with him. Why is there still such a stigma to it?

well if someone is single, what do they have to lose from trying it. It is getting increasingly harder to meet compatible people through other methods, and the usual club bar setting is so yesterday. At least you might be able to meet someone more compatible online as long as you are careful and avoid the weirdos

Theres no stigma any more. Put it this way. How long would you have to sit in a bar before someone even 51 percent "right" walked in the door? You can't leave life to chance like that.

Computers have changed everything. There are hundreds of people who are potential partners out there and it is YOUR ONLY WAY TO MEET THEM-they might not all be 100% right but 90% right is nice too. We are all humans and nobody is perfect.

On of the nice things about online dating is that your family/friends can "vet" potential candidates which is quite good fun?

There are plenty of tips for online dating safety. There are thousands of normal people in this world, don't forget.

Pros, you can get to know someone without putting yourself at risk. Or having to listen to lame pick up lines. You don't have to hang out in bars etc.

Cons, people lie! Some of my friends have developed deep feelings for men who are divorced and have no children only to find out, that they are married have several children and their wives are pregnant.

Beware of anyone who won't move an online relationship to the phone and then face to face in a short period of time. But you also have to be smart about it too, like meet in a VERY public place. And don't give out information that can be easily traced.

There are pros and cons no matter where you meet anyone.

Internet dating is great but you get what you pay for. The free sites are full of unhappy married men pretending to be single. The majority of cheaters will not pay for internet dating since they would not want it to appear on their credit card or bank statement.
