I will be leaving as a freshman in 6 days. Should I concentrate on academics, my social life, or what? I'd just like to get some other opinions on it, thanks.

The trick to college isn't to concentrate on one thing more than the other, but instead to learn how to balance, which is an important life skill. You're going to have to learn how to split your time evenly, although academics should be the most important thing to you and treated that way. Once you get the hang of college life (i.e. no parents or teachers breathing down your back and telling you what to do), you can reprioritize and evalaute how you have been doing so far.

If you are a guy, social skills. It is a very real trend in American business that social skills are becoming more important that technical skills. Outside of the IT department, your social skills will be more important in everything from the interview to the daily grind. As long as you get decent grades and know your area pretty well, the job will go to the "best fit" for the job and promotions usually go to the one that works hard, produces well, AND everyone likes. This IS more so for men that women. Many find it a very disappointing and even worrrisome trend in business and say it points to a weaker America were social skills are more important than technical know how, but I'm just bein' real with ya! Some companies won't even interview anyone with a 3.8 GPA or higher because they figure they spent so much time on academics that they did not develope socially in college.
I've had entire interviews that were about golf, the company softball team, and my fraternity days!
Here's some links. Read columns like this regularly to stay up on these things. Please do remember to actually learn what you are going to college for so you don't build a bridge that collapses or something. Good luck!

Academics is the first and foremost reason for going to college. That said, don't shut your self in your room and study all day. You'll have a few days before classes start to make some friends and develop the beginnings of a social life, but you shouldn't go overboard until you settle in and figure out the ideal balance between school and fun that works for you.

Well now that your PAYING for you education, I would have to say focus on your academics, as much as you can!!!!!
I'm not saying you should be a loner, but if your buds are goin out to the bar and you have a test, esay or even a quiz the next day or something soon, do your self a favour and give them a rain-check. Because in college everything counts, and if you don't pass it the first time, you better believe you'll be counting how much that course you failed will be from you wallet!!
