TRUSTING IN SOMETHING THAT CAN NOT BE PROVED

2006-08-20 13:55:55 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

A belief is a thought and a commitment to adhere to a particular viewpoint, with an accompaning feeling of assurance, which is intuitively based.

There are degrees of certainty, and I think we can generally distinguish 5 types:
1. >50 % chance is a belief that something may be more probably true, but we are very unsure.
2. Something around 60 percent probable is believed to be probable, but not necessarily true.
3. around 90% ect...
4. say above 98 percent probable, this is a strong belief but not entirely certain.
5. 99.9999% probable or greater; here depending on what we are talking about we may have reached near absolute certainty.

Bertrand Russell has written on this question of what is Belief.

Belief is the holding of a proposition to be either true or false. (A proposition is that which can be either true or false). So, holding something to be true is belief, but so is holding something to be false.

The 'holding' of a belief is a function of the will. When we reason, the will releases its hold on the propositions with which we reason and they are then no longer beliefs but hypotheses. We cannot reason with beliefs, because reasoning brings propositions into question.

Some people desire so strongly to hold certain beliefs that they can rarely or never release them into the reasoning process. Such willfully held belief is called faith.

Belief is always a matter of will - a matter of choice. We can always choose whether we will or will not hold a proposition to be true or false. Such choice should be based upon evidence and reasoning, but, unfortunately, sometimes it is based upon desire.

In theory, belief is a set of answers unique to every individual, used as a schema or template to explain the world known or otherwise, and which (in funtction) guides one's cognitions, affect, and behavior.
