Hi there…
I have a problem with my boss; he keeps telling me that in order to take 1 sick day I have to get him a written medical excuse in order to get the benefit. But when his buddies got hangover they CAN take the sick day. Last time a got the flu, I work in (food service) I COULDN'T get the day paid, they don’t offer insurance and I don’t have money to pay a $150 medical consult so the Dr. can tell me to take some Nyquil.
What can I do?

You need to check your company policy regarding sick leave. The person not to ask is your boss, see if there is someone higher up-you might even have to contact someone in corporate or the labor relations department of your company.

Well, usually boss' will let you take 1 or 2 sick days off (maybe with no pay, depending on where you work). Usually it is standard that if you take 3 or more days off, you see a doctor.

I know it's not fair about the boss' friends take "hang over" days off, but thats the way it goes! If you work for a small family owned company, then they will usually treat non-family (or close friends of family) different than everyone else. If you work for a big company, then there is someone else higher to talk to about sick days.

All in all, if you are unhappy at work, find a new job. Happiness is much better than money alone. If you have proof that they are treating you differently than other employees, ten find a new job & quit.

It's hard to say what to do without more information about where you work. It may be possible to contact your local department of labor to find out what your rights are as an employee. Personally I would start looking for a new job. If you try to force your boss to make changes in his business for the better, he will eventually do whatever he can to make your life miserable so you will quit your job.

Go in sick and let them tell you to leave. Tell them you can't afford to lose the hours. Ask if you can use sick time. At least they can see that you are really sick. It works every time.

Talk to human resources. There has to be some non-profit workers group you could talk to for advice.
