Well, a lot of it has to do with rebellion. Plus it's a "big decision" and young adults think that this is the biggest decision ever, the first real one since gaining freedom from... or during... the rule their parents have over them. It's also a way to be an individual, to stand out from the crowd. At our age, as I'm sure with others, there is a double edged sword, a huge pressure to stand apart from the crowd and yet become a part of the homogenization that is our society. Being Inked is a way to stand apart, yet fit in.
I am 19 and I got a tattoo a couple of months ago. I didn't run out and get it the day I turned 18, nor did I walk into a shop, point at a pretty design and sit there because I felt like it. I planned it out, drew it myself and thought long and hard. I got my tattoo because yoga and Buddhism have changed my life. I wanted to be reminded of my new beginning every time I look down in sadness or in glancing. When I see the OM symbol on my foot, especially when I'm deep in meditative yoga, it reminds me to breathe and flow with nature and the journey of my life. It's a symbol of who I am becoming.
There are some young adults like myself, who are mature enough to truly appreciate tattooing as an art, as a permanent mark or as a way to commemorate something truly important, like a lost loved one. And then there are those young kids who go out and get boobs or unicorns tattooed on their butts and other parts of their anatomy because it's "scene." Any way you look at it, getting inked is a right of passage and it always will be.

I got a tattoo because the tattoo itself marks part of my identity. It's not visible to most people the majority of the time (it's on my lower back) and often times I even forget that it's there, but when I do see it, I'm glad that I got it because it's part of who I am (it's a hibiscus from Hawaii, which is where my dad's side of the family-- four generations ago- first immigrated to from Japan). When others see it and ask about it, I am able to tell them the same thing.

Because they think it's cute. They think it's very attractive to the opposite people. To me it's stupid and ridiculous.

most parents are against this 'tatooing', and kids like going against their parents wishes. protection from over-protection, if you will.
