Well, I'm beginning to look into college, and I have a question about the applications.

I'm in my sophomore year, and I'm currently taking 3 advanced classes. Last year I took 2. I'm confident I can achieve an "A" in 2 out of the 3, but my chances of making an "A" in one of the classes are slim to none. I still have the option of dropping the class, and I've been considering doing just that.

So, my question is:

What would look better on a college application, a 4.0 GPA in the average courses, or a "B" to "C" average in harder classes?

Taking the harder classes. I took some AP courses in high school and they were really good for me, especially for getting into college. It shows that you don't like to coast through courses and that you want to challenge yourself and learn more. Plus those courses really prep you for college level classes.

You already have a decent record of taking advanced courses(and I'm assuming you'll take more in your last two years), so I'm not sure that one more will make or break your transcript. You've already established a record of challenging yourself academically. Personally, I'd take the 2 advanced courses that you can do well in and just do the regular version of the one you can't. Considering that sometimes the course title doesn't make it obvious that it's an advanced class (unless it says honors or AP), particularly for freshman and sophomore classes, you're probably better off getting the higher GPA instead.

Well, it's better to get a B in a hard class than an A in an easy or moderately hard class. But it's better to get an A in an easy class than get a C in a hard class.

Of course, a couple of Cs aren't going to kill your chances of getting into college, so if it's just one class you're worried about, you might as well just take it and see what happens.

Unfortunately, some of the colleges say to your kind of question, "It's better to get an A in a hard class. We only accept the best students." Which is an opinion that really stinks, but I found it in an NYU brochure.

No school is going to be impressed with a C average, even in harder classes. If you are in harder classes and pulling C's, you honestly shouldn't be in there. B's are acceptable, but obviously you should be trying for A's. Schools take into consideration the difficulty of your courseload, but I wouldn't count on those harder classes when it comes to impressing an admissions office.

If you think you can get a good enough grade for a transfer credit, take the class. I remember when I was in college I was kicking myself for not taking more college credit courses in high school... it would have given me a much lighter and easier schedule.

Nothing wrong with an occasional B in a tougher class. Admissions departments take that into mind.

Take the hard classes and show you're not afraid of a challenge. They'll look beyond the grades, especially if it's just one.
