A freelancer is someone who sells his/her services independently, as opposed to being an employee of the person/organization buying the goods/services. In other words, the freelancer works for him/herself, not somebody else.

Freelancers are under no obligation to work for just one party as an employee does. They can provide services to as many organizations as they choose.

Freelancers can also be thought of as independent contractors or consultants, depending on what they provide.

As an example, a person might be a photographer. That person would own all of their equipment and pay for all of the supplies and processing.

If the photographer happened to snap a photo of a crime in progress or a rare weather phenomenon the pictures could be sold to any newspaper, magazine, art gallery, or any other entity that might offer the highest bid. The photographer would be under no obligation to sell to that same buyer again.

The photographer would be free to do private shoots (weddings) and might be willing to be hired for special assignments.

That is just an example in one field. It applies to many.

Freelance means that you work for yourself when you offer your services. This means that you look for your own customers, accept or reject different types of projects, set your own fees and hours, and you accept the risks of working on your own.
