What if we tried to solve the "which is better, conservatism or liberalism" question scientifically. Not for real - this is just a thought question. Suppose every state has to choose - conservative or liberal - and then we let only liberal politicians govern one side, and only conservative politicians govern the other.

What would happen? Would the liberal side raise taxes to the point of socialism, and go bankrupt? Would the conservative side choke under horrid air and water pollution? Would the liberal side outlaw religion altogether, and the conservative side end up under an oppressive theocracy? Would the conservative side fight for truth, justice, and the American way under President Rush, while the pacifist liberal side is a continual easy target for terrorism under President Sheehan?

What are your ideas - how would things work well under your preferred side? How would the other side falter and fail? [repost from politics & gov't - I want to see cultural answers, too.]

Okay - one addition. This is not a black/white forever decision - this is a 12-year experiment to just discover what would REALLY happen if one side or the other got what they wanted. Come on - each side has some strongly held beliefs - on defense, on cultural morality, on freedom for business versus taking care of people This question is really "what if both sides - for a while - got their way?" Give me an example or two of what you think would happen in specific areas.

People are too complex for the answers to be simple.

I too, think you sound as if you're conservative with some untried, stereotypical ideas about Liberals.

I don't think it's good to promote the division of this country either. "One nation under God."

You had better read more political theory AND history. Don't ignore the lessons from the past. Wiemar Republic, the Liberal government before the Spanish Civil War, and our own American history, to mention just a few histories.

I don't think the Conservative states would let the Liberal ones carry on, no matter how successful the latter were. They would want to take over and dominate the resources, in the name of "democracy" and "stability."

Ok, your question sounds like you are yourself conservative with some odd views of liberals. With a liberal government, all religion will be welcomed, and stick with the American dream. And hey, I agree that pacifist liberals aren't great for our government, but most liberals aren't pacifists.
But aside from your questions, to answer the main question sounds to me to require novels. It's a really good question. Simply now, I think that both would do fine. Like weather, politics is erratic. Nobody can predict what will happen in the long run. All we know is that weather and politics follow certain trends. And usually, if anybody looks hard enough, those trends are broken. The greatest teams of mathemeticians and politics experts can't tell you what would happen, no matter how far chaos studies have advanced. If liberal, who knows, maybe the liberal after a century of seeing what happens in their type of government, they change to conservative. And vice versa. Me personally, I am a young 3/4 liberal, the rest a compilation of a bunch of other types of beliefs.
Serious answer, If liberal, we wont have some other middle east or any other country taking us over. Even if our military is reduced by half, in capital or human, when attacked we will defend and go to war. Recruiting will come back to normal level and we'll return to current military strength. But to me, militarily speaking, I don't want to reduce our military strenghth, just cuz of the obvious repercussions. I'd imagine plenty other liberals and conservatives feel the same way.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of America and too the republic for witch it stands "ONE nation under god" INDIVISIBLE with liberty and justice for all

these talk show radio hosts and news channels have freedom of speech but they seek to divide this nation they do not show the real America that exists in the middle not on the lunatic fringe. they seek to divide for one reason only Greed . It gets ratings and sells soap.
Turn over your dollar Bill there on the great seal there is a pyramid with four sides everyone has a side your side my side there side Four equal sides to a pyramid and when these come together in compromise and in reason the eye of God at the top opens and smiles on our accomplishments. anuit ceptis
Your idea is anti American but when Americans are bombarded with lies and half the picture good Americans think this way .Why not seek a solution that brings Americans together The TRUTH if you don't feed on the lies generated by both sides is that the majority of Americans are in the middle.

We would have either have a dictatorship or another civil war. Even though there is a constant battle between the right and the left that's what makes our country a democracy. As bad as it can seem at times Remember-it is still the best country in the world.

Sure, we dont need unity. Is that what you are trying to say? Dont let the way that Repubs demonize Dems make you think anything they say is real. Moderatism is the best way. Extremism, and fanaticism, are harmful to civil society. If someone is saying something extreme, you know they are full of BS.

I'd want to live where they didn't have hurricanes or tornadoes. Seriously, I like how everyone is all mixed up. It makes life much more interesting. A house divided against itself shall not stand. We need each other.
