the first thing you have to do is build up good core strength and calf strength. without that your training will be less effective.

best test of core strength is to get into the plank position. without cheating (meaning keeping your back flat and parellel to the floor and butt low), you should be able to hold that position for about a 2 minutes.

to exercise your calves, get up on your toes and run the quick feet drill. you should be able to keep that up for at least 4 minutes , your calves will burn, but if you can hang in there that long you're ready for some other drills.

this is important as a foundation so you don't hurt your knees, ankles and hips in running the other drills.

classic speed drill is to run the 40 in an all out sprint with a resistance parachute or with a harness with a friend holding some elastic bands.

next for agility, go purchase an agility ladder or agility rings. then google some drills to do. jerry rice used this equipment throughout his career. high knees, in and outs, ali shuffles, and crib walks. learn all these drills and do them backwards and forward. they will teach you good footwork. as you get stronger and stronger, you will be able to do these drills faster. be sure to time youself through the drills so you can track your progress.

get your ankles strong by doing a lot of lateral shuffles, have a friend randomly blow a whistle to change direction.

last is vision. physical talent is only one part of barry sanders, the other part of him was amazing field vision. unforetuneately, only way to learn that is to practice and watch film. things like evading a tackler by running towards him at an odd angle rather than running away from him is something that can't be taught.

good luck.

I've said this so many times, but this topic keeps coming up. The position or running back is about running, blocking, and receiving. Payton was 10/10 in each category. Sanders was 10/10 on one of those categories. Nothing more to be said.

You have to practice hard, even when you don't want to. You have to know that you are good even when people doubt you. That's what I did, and I ended up having one of the greatest seasons in Michigan High School Football History. Check me out in the MHSAA record books at MHSAA.com. (Torry Taylor) Also, buy some strength shoes. You can get them at eastbay.com. They cost about 125 bucks though. They can take two tenths of a second off your 40 yard dash and increase your speed bursts, acceleration, and vertical leap. Good Luck. Peace.

Sprints. Rather than say running 1,000 meters all in one go, do 10 100-meter sprints. You can also do them zigzagging making cuts. Just go full out for 100 meters...walk or jog back and repeat. I think that will build the leg strength you need for the short bursts in football.

As Peter Falk said, "Serpentine!"
