I am alone in the house--the kids are out playing--and all of the sudden a light in the next room just comes on!

bad switch, loose bulb, +vibration. did your handi hubbi just fix something in the electric????? grab the kids and run. LOL

You either have a short in your wiring or you have a ghost that is playing games with you.. Have an electrician look at it and then just relax if he says that there is nothing wrong ..
Ghost like to play games like that. you might want to go down to the city offices and find out about previous owner and see if someone had died in your house. if that is all that is happening it is a nice one so don't worry.

My problem-- exactly the same-- was a cross over signal from my TV remote and my ceiling fan reception-- was weird let me tell you-- I blamed the cat-- I blamed a short-- took an electrician call to fix-- just re-set the reception do hicky on the fan. Not my most expensive learning experience--
