There are four elements that can (generally) be found in a song.

The first is the verse, which changes everytime you come back to it.

The second is the Chorus. This is the hook, or the payoff. This has to be what brings the listener coming back to the song again and again. Its found after the verse or the Prechorus.

The third is the bridge. This is usually found after the second run through of verse and chorus. This is where you get to change up the song a bit, its never repeated, and usually leads into the last chorus.

The last part is the prechorus. I listed this last because its not found in everysong. The prechorus is a short lead-in into the chorus that will be used if its awkward to jump from the verse to the chorus.

If you key them this way:
Verse: A
Chorus: B
Bridge: C

The most common song structure is:

A A B A B B C B B

Try listening for this in songs on the radio, almost all of them should follow this formula with slight variations.

There's the technical response. I kind of think looking at songwriting as a craft and not a form of art really hurts songwriting and the music business in general, so I don't really follow this form of thinking, but I suppose its nice to have some guidelines when first starting out.

Hope this helped,
Dan

I am a song writer myself. Some people have different ways to write songs than others. but there's not a specific way of writing a chorus or specific way you write a verse. Usually there is a chorus than the bridge between each verse & chorus that is in a song. They are just guidelines.. i never follow them The key to writing a GOOD song, is to interact the user into the vision of the writer themselves. Of course that just means making it catchy. In my opinion also, is that the song must not be um to repetative & must have some type of truth & great meaning. Also when writing a song, you should do it like you would write an essay. Not to the full extent, but you would have the start of the song, and then the climax and then the ending. There's a WHOLE lot more, but I won't get into it unless you really need to know more. If in that case, please tell me/us how you are writing a song, and what you have so far (if you are writing one that is)

there are many different forms of song writing, and many different syles.
The simplest style is called strophic form:
verse chorus verse chorus etc

From there it gets more complicated. Most
pop and rock songs today are written in
a strophic form with a bridge (a musical interlude
that is noticeably different), like so:

Verse chorus verse chorus Bridge chorus

Some songs include intros and outros also that
are different from the main music of the rest of the song.

I could go on writing pages and pages, but theres the rudimentary basics. If you want more info, contact me.

hey hey!!! ok, here's what u do... u need to have a good opening. then u should a have an aawsome chorus, the chorus should appear atleast 2 times. then u need a bridge, a bridge is a part of the song that sounds totally diffrent, but still goes with the song.

Songwriting is about whatever you want it to be, and the structure of the song can be quite different. You can put the chorus first or last or in the middle, or have no chorus at all. As long as the "total picture" of the "arrangement" is cool, go for it.

Being a author, i'm variety of a lyric junkie, if one ingredient is crap in a music, it greater clever no longer be the lyrics, yet music is very substantial additionally via fact the melodies and harmonies, or perhaps random noise thrown in pay attention and there are what deliver the music to existence and actually turn it right into a relateable, or ridiculously unrelateable tale. although, all in each and all of the music and lyrics could play off of another, the music could make the lyrics sound fantastic and the the lyrics could make the music entrancing.
