Hm...it's hard to pick his best story but I'd have to say that my favorites are Herbert West: Reanimator and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Both of those stories are long, give a lot of background and don't have happy endings but then again, which H.P. Lovecraft stories DO...

Oooh, so many. I have a particular fondness for "The Colour Out of Space", but "The Call of Cthulhu is the quintessential Lovecraft and a must-read if you're intereste din the Mythos.
