Jesus said to his disciples that the end of the world would come before their generation was over. Well, that generation has been over for a while now, and the world still seems to be here. Maybe the events in the bible took place on another planet?

The Bible says that no one will know the end time. That's why I get so frustrated with people who say the world is coming to an end every time Israel drops a bomb.

Folks, Revelation was written 300 years after Christ died by a man who lived on a small island in the Mediterranian, and was writing to three churches. A common game at the time was to turn people's names into numbers. Nero was one of the most hated men of the time (he put his own statue in the Temple of Jerusalem and demanded to be worshipped there), and under this "game," his number was 666. Another spelling of his name came up 626, and this was the number used in an early copy of Revelation. I think the author of Revelation would have written to these churches about things happening in their own time, not what would happen 2000 years later.

A valid alternate translation of the passage in question is "this race" (rather than "this generation").

Many of the Jews from Jesus time were concerned that the Romans might eradicate them (the Jews).

Through the centuries, there has been a lot of hostility against Jews, so it has always been a valid concern on the part of Jews, a concern -- are they going to continue to exist as a race and a culture.

Jesus is making a statement that "this race" (the Jews) will still be around when Jesus returns.

Cordially,
John

Jesus actually said the world will end within a generation of the recreation of Israel, which happened in 1948. A biblical generation is 100 years.

When asked about the signs at the end of the age, Jesus repled, "Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So likewise ye, (Israel) when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."

Jeremiah and Hosea calls Jerusalem and Israel the fig tree, at the time of Christ this was their national symbol on their coins. There is no doubt Jesus meant we are to look out for the rebirth of Israel and the capture of Jerusalem as the greatest sign of His return in the last days.

This is consistant with what all the old testament prophets also said. That the Jews would be regathered one last time from the nations back to their homeland Israel (after terrible persecution in the nations/the holocaust) - yet the atheists of the world would still hate them/Israel. God even describes the nations "roaring" (Isaiah 17:12-14 and Pslam 2) at Israels wars of defence against those who want to finish what Hitler started (i.e as we are seeing today).

A generation, according to the Bible is 40 years. So from when the Jews captured Jerusalem in 1967, one generation from then ends 2007.

'When her branch Is yet tender' means that Israel will still be a new state (it was founded in May 1948).
'Putteth forth leaves' could mean when Israel recaptured all of Jerusalem in June 1967.
'Summer is nigh' means that the end of the world is near.

The world as they knew it did end before their lifetime ended, with the uprisings in many countries against the Roman rule

Actually he said he would return within the lifetimes of his disciples not that the world would end.

yeah- so sick of stupid people and their apocalyptic visions. We all know the world is gonna end when we either pollute our planet beyond repair, blow each other up, or the sun runs out. At any rate, everything ends so stop freaking out about it.
