What exactly are the distinctions between the two?

Yes, it depends on the optics. A periscope can have a built in telescope.
A periscope is used to see above the level you are at. Submarines used them when under water. Telescopes are to see things at a distance.

Yes you can !
The only difference between a periscope and a telescope is that a telescope gets farther out in space than a periscope .

People use binoculars which sees not as far away as a periscope so your all set using a persicope !!

After seeing this question we tested it out at out observatory .

Basically a matter of nomenclature. A simple periscope need have no lenses, but most do so as to enlarge the field of view. A telescope shrinks the field of view, but enlarges the images of things in the field.

periscope allows you to see objects by bouncing their image off angled mirrors....
a telescope magnifies a straight image

periscope lets you see the things and images as they are. it uses flat mirrors.
telescope magnifies the images for you to see, so you can see them closer. it uses lenses or parabolic mirrors
