I am emigrating to the US from the UK and would like information about the american school system. Middle school, high school, grade school. I don't know where to start looking as I don't know the age group for children in 8th grade for example. What grade would my 13 year old be in?

Kindergarten is usually for 5-6 year olds. Then, it goes up from there.
6-7 year olds in first grade (elementary school)
7-8 year olds in second grade (")
8-9 year olds in third grade (")
9-10 year olds in fourth grade (")
10-11 year olds in fifth grade (")
11-12 year olds in sixth grade (")
12-13 year olds in seventh grade (junior high or middle school)
13-14 year olds in eighth grade (junior high or middle school)
15-16 year olds in 9th grade (this can sometimes be in a middle school, sometimes a junior high school and sometimes a high school)
16-17 year olds in 10th grade (high school)
17-18 year olds in 11th grade
18-19 year olds in the 12th grade

Of course, many students also start kindergarten young, so you can adapt the ages downward by one year in each category as well...

A 13 year old is usually in 7th or 8th grade. Most elementary schools go from kindergarten to 5th grade which are the ages of 5 or 6 to 10 or 11. Middle school is 6th grade to 8th grade and the ages of 11 or 12 to 13 or 14. Then comes high school which is 9th grade to 12th grade and the ages are 14 to 18. It also depends on when your childs birthday is. My birthday was at the end of september so when I went into 8th grade I was 13 and then turned 14 very soon after.

Generally, kids in the U.S. start kindergarten at five, so that the grade you are in is five less than your age. So your 13-year-old would probably start in the eighth grade. This would probably put him or her in his/her last year of middle school. The exact breakdown of what type of school your child will be in (i.e., middle school/junior high school) depends on the school district, and private schools often have different systems altogether. The best plan would be to speak with the administrators in the school district you and your child will be living in to find out more information.

Children start Kindergarden at 5 years of age (unless they go to a private school!). After that, the grades depend on the maturity and scholastic excellence of the child. I skipped two grades as a kid. There is not a definite age for each grade in the public school system.

Your son would be in 8th grade.

Grade School is from 1st - 5th grade in most schools, where children start 1st grade normally at age 6

Middle School is 6th-8th grade

High School is 9th-12th grade

schools vary by school district. your child would most likely be in 7th unless they are turning 14 soon, then most likely 8th grade. both grades are usually in middle school. middle school is basically a way of introducing kids to something more like high school. make sure you research school districts though, they do vary as far as the quality of education goes. usually schools in more affluent areas are better because the area payes more in taxes. private schools are another story.

your son would be in either 7th or 8th grade depending on the day he was born, also depending on the state you plan on living in.
