As a former airline employee, maybe a few facts would help.
Annually 1 in 5000 people die in automobile accidents.
Annually 1 in 11 million people die in plane accidents.
A plane can still fly even if an engine fails.
A plane can still fly even if it is missing part of the wing.
No airplane has ever crashed due to turbulence.
Flying on a modern airliner is very much like riding the bus, subway, or train. I hope this helps.

smaller planes are a rougher ride. i'd say fly on a large plane and sit in the middle section of seats, away from the windows. bring a book or some music with you. let the flight attendants know your fears, they're real pros at making your 1st flight a good experience.

The only way to get over it is to do it! My suggestion is to take a flight that has a layover. This way you would have to take 4 plane rides in a short time span. You'll get used to it.

Maybe take a flying course so you can learn the basic dynamics of flight, and learn what to do in an emergency.

If your first flight is on a passenger airliner, It's just like riding a bus. Trust me.

I have never flown either so I don't know how much help I'll be but maybe you could take something like valium to help keep you calm.

Remember, you're not afraid of flying...but you should be afraid of crashing.
It's still safer than driving.
