The window did flash momentarily 'disc' and full battery icon. Hold button is something you turn, all the rest, you press. On one side is button with icons that look like forward and back and right below it are the letters chg with an arrow down. There's a volume button. I attached the headphones. I pushed each button. Why doesn't the 'play mode' play? And what is the hold gizmo for?

The hold button is typically a "lock out" control, used to deactivate all of the other controls. When the player is off, this allows you to pack it in a bag (e.g., suitcase) and not have it accidentally turned on. When the player is on, this allows you to stash it in a pocket or backpack, and not have it accidentally turned off.
