1. Eat less meat. Due to increased intake of animal proteins, the incidence of kidney stones is 10 times more prevalent now than it was at the turn of the century.
2. Drink plenty of fluids - one study has shown that people who drink more than 2 1/2 liters of water every day have almost a 40 percent decrease in the risk of developing a stone than those who drank less water.
3. Limit consumption of grapefruit juice and cola drinks. Studies have shown that these may actually increase the risk of developing stones.
4. Adopt a diet high in potassium and magnesium - these minerals decrease the likelihood of kidney stones.
5. Talk to your doctor about taking supplements such as pyridoxine and magnesium. Taken together, these reduce oxalate, a mineral salt found in kidney stones.
6. Limit your calcium and salt intake.

Lay off the calcium! I'm serious! My dad had kidney stones a few months ago, and he loves milk, custard, ice cream, pumpkin pie, eclairs...all that stuff! It's surprising, really...but too much of something is a bad thing. You should also drink more water - If you tend to form stones, you should try to drink enough liquids throughout the day to produce at least 2 quarts of urine in every 24-hour period. People prone to forming calcium oxalate stones may be asked by their doctor to cut back on certain foods if their urine contains an excess of oxalate: beets, chocolate, coffee, cola, nuts, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, tea, wheat bran
People should not give up or avoid eating these foods without talking to their doctor first. In most cases, these foods can be eaten in limited amounts. Remember, moderation is the key, depending on the origin of your kidney stones! Help any?

Kidney stones are calcium deposits. If your calcium intake is excessive it could lead to production of kidney stones. Of course, you can't know your body's metabolism that intimately. It may be that your body is genetically or otherwise prone to producing kidney stones; in this case there is nothing you can do about it. You should speak to your doctor about this. It's possible that blood test may provide insight that would not be available to people answering questions here.
Good luck.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

you sometimes just can't
it's an unfortunate fact of life, some people get them, and some people don't
you may get 5 a year, or you may not ever get one in your life. Lowering the calcium in your diet really won't help either.
