That's really a more complicated question to answer then you might think because where you live is also very important. For example, I earn 40k, roughly 19/hr, at my first job out of college. My mom makes the same amount after being in the same industry for 20yrs. The difference is that I live downtown Boston and she lives in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York. She can rent a 2-story, 3 bedroom, with basement and parking townhouse for $750 and I can't even get a box on the street for that much. So even though technically we make the same amount, everything is so much cheaper where she lives that she in reality gets paid quite a bit more than I do. My point is that just comparing what you make to others might not actually tell you what you want to know.

I used this when interviewing to figure out what salary I should ask for. It lets you put in your industry, location, education, experience, etc.

As a vet tech, which is what I do now, I only make $16.50 an hour. Huge pay cut from counseling, I was making $60.00 + an hour then. But I love what I do, what can I say.

Where I live a person is lucky to get $7.50 an hour. I have a Masters degree and no job. Here it is WHO you know, not what you know. I live outside of Jamestown, NY.
