i really like the prismacolor soft thick-leaded pencils because they blend easily and render bright color. are there any others on the market that are comparable at a lesser price that you can reccommend?

I've been on the same quest and Prismacolors are the best I've found. The other brands all used too much wax. What you need to do, is buy them at Michaels or Joanns when they have an ad with a coupon for "40% off any regularly priced item." It still ends up being expensive, but you get to save a lot of money compared to full price. Message me if you need any more information.

Pearls art supply. They're called 'Spectrum' soft lead colorted pencils. They blend well and at half the cost.

You should play around with hard pressed crayon. They are cheap and are a mix between conte/pastels/oil pastels/crayon. They are rich and very fun to work with. They blend well and also pick up textures from rubbings. They are wonderful!
