I think all forms of slavery is immoral and wrong whether the slave lives a lavish lifestyle in a gilded cage or a cruel and horrible tortured existence is a complete personal hell. The sad fact is, there are now more slaves of all kinds in the world today then there ever have been, it's a simple fact that abolishing something doesn't make it cease to exist; it just goes underground, and it still needs to be sought out and stopped where ever it still exists. I also belive it was Bob Marley who said something about mental slavery, having a slave mentality which also needs to be fought against and eliminated, but i think being a servant or butler as long as the compensation is fair is a form of employment like any other. Maybe the idea of one person hireing another for personal service is as distastful to you as it is me though.

Of coarse it was right that in most of the civilized world slavery has been abolished. Unfortunately it has not been abolished world wide. Butlers are not slaves. Good butlers receive an excellent salary that usually includes room and board. It does not matter what color the butler is. Slaves also come in colors other than black. Seems to me you need a lot more education.

Butlers take intensive training and apply for positions; whilst slaves were sold and beaten into submission to meet their masters' whims. The sad thing about your question is that you are totally undermining the whole history of slavery by equating it to that of those who work in service. You should read Alex Hayley's "Roots" - long but it would give you a real insight into the world of slavery and why it is right that so many rose up in anti-slavery until it was ended. People fought to end slavery and to give liberty, freedom and equality to all. It took years for the knock-on effects of that to be eradicated - some would say they haven't been yet...and if you look at the poverty wages and sweat shops around the world they'd probably be right. Slavery was abolished in the developed world, but there is still a black market for slaves - need I remind you of the poor Chinese illegal immigrants who died winkle picking off Morecambe Bay?

The difference between a butler and a slave is that the butler is paid handsomely for his services and is free to seek other employment whenever he wishes. I think that most butlers would disagree with your statement that their positions are another form of slavery. Butlers perform a service to their employers just like any other person who works.

Service and slavery are two different things. Generally you don't get paid to be a slave, as a servent you may not get paid well, but you do have certain rights and often receive a salary. Not always a good salary, but one just the same. To buttle is not to be a slave, but in the past a slave could be a butler in certain houses.

Of course it was right! I hardly think that someone like a butler is a slave--he has a choice to leave that job and go somewhere else. I'm rather proud of the fact that we can't find any evidence that my family owned slaves--one woman inherited 3 from her uncle and immediately set them free.

Yes, I'm glad that slavery was abolished. Yes, black butlers would still be called slaves.

Slavery goes under many disguises but it still exists. Forced labor in certain parts of the world where prisoners are forced to work for the benefit of some rich, powerful person who benefits (and pays the government next to nothing), here in the US it is known as involuntary servitude (illegals brought here and forced to work for outrageous hours for no pay, little food and no benefits and are physically/sexually abused, illegals that are forced into prostitution rings, sweat shops, etc... (usually women although men, too, from Third World Nations) and in some countries where women have no rights at all and are treated as though they were property.

Slavery abolished? Not really. Don't believe it!

yes i believe that is was right to abolish slavery. butlers today are not slaves if they are getting paid fair wages or a decent exchange (free room and board, food, and salary) and have the choice to leave their jobs no matter what color they are. though most of us can be considered "wage slaves" since the majority of us are not self-employed and have to work under different authorities to survive.

i dont believe that butlers are anything like slaves. slaves lived in the worst conditions imaginable and were forced to do the work with little to no pay. Butlers choose to be butlers and they are paid much better than slaves and they are treated better than slaves.
