You'll most likely will have to get a brand new case, and then transfer the parts from the dell onto the new case if you get a new processor, cause chances are, the motherboards' connections won't line up right onto the back of your computer. You'll need to get a motherboard (Socket LGA775) to get a dual core processor. You could go to http://www.newegg.com and search for Dual Core Processor. It'll give you prices on both motherboards & the processor's themselves. I myself, have a Fry's Electronics around me so I got the 3ghz dual core Pentium D 930 w/ board for $159 which is a great deal.

if u r gonna buy a Pentium D then u will need a motherboard with a 945 chipset or better
and if u gonna get an intel Core Duo processor then u will need a motherboard with 965 or 975 chipset
if u gonna get an AMD X2 then u must have a motherboard with socket 939 or AM2

It would be hard to install a new motherboard into a dell case because the layout and standoffs on a dell case is different then a normal atx case, you can mod your case to make it fit.

here are some motherboards with viiv and the 945 chipset
