As an employer, sometimes we like to get a better feel for the character of a potential employee. I don't know how personal but some questions that may seem a little out of the ordinary may tell the interviewer what character qualties you posess and if those said qualities are what the company is looking for. Hope this helped.

That depends on how personal. There definitely are personal questions which are inappropriate in an interview setting. Some in fact are illegal to ask. Age questions, questions about race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, marital staus, religion, or group affiliations are all inappropriate or illegal questions to ask. If the interviewer was asking you to relate personal experiences to answer job related questions, then he or she may have been using a technique called behavioral interviewing. This technique is based on the idea that past behavior is the best predicter of future behaviors.

What kind of personal questions? If the position required a lot of overtime or travel, they may want to know what your family commitments are like as they may interfere with your ability to carry out the job. But I can't see too many other personal questions being appropriate. I would probably not take the position if you are offered it as they don't sound like they are professional people to work for.

No. It's generally not recommended, since they would get into areas where it's unfair to discriminate. If you didn't ask and couldn't know, you cannot be accused of discriminationg on that basis.
