This is an old saying dating back to the time of when the main way of making cooking pots were made out of iron or cast iron which was always blackened by the heat of the flame. So whether it would have been a pot or a kettle the end result would be the same after being on a flame. It is using wording of to a like objects to make a point. For instance you cant say to anther person your a thief if you have stolen something yourself unless you are willing to call yourself one. For other people who know you have done the same thing will remind you of it when your coming down on another person for doing the exact same thing you have done.

It does, just not as loudly. After all, the noise from the kettle IS muffled by its lid, and venting spout. The point being the pot lid must be ****** to vent quietly, while the kettle naturally does so.

The kettle is unaware that color is important, and therefore does not feel the need to comment on the color of his pot comrade.

Because it has been in the same situation over the fire. Know thyself before making comments about the status of others.

It does, often. The irony being that they are both equally blackened by the flames. It's called hypocracy.
