a complete and utter shambles which ruined what looked like it would be an interesting last day. i don't blame the Pakistani players for being upset because they at least deserve an explanation and evidence that they've done something wrong, although i think they went about complaining in the wrong way. On the whole im just disappointed that this is going to overshadow what has been a good, well fought, entertaining series

Well, I didn't actually watch it, but I have seen some news articles about the incident... it appears as if the umpires may have been a little hasty in penalising the Pakistan team, while the ball seemed to show 'unusual wear' it had been hit into the stands a few times, and gone are the days when reverse-swing is a mystery, even English players can do it now, so that alone does not constitute proof... however I cannot see much of a resolution now, the players are unlikely to want to play under this cloud, the umpires will feel that having warned the Pakistanis, that their failure to return to the field constitutes forfeiture, so THEY will see a continuation of the match as undermining their authority, as would replacing them with fresh umpires... this could also set a nasty precedent, in that any team who felt harshly dealt with might then refuse to play to force an umpire change... personally, I feel that cricket has always been viewed as one of the last bastions of sportsmanship in modern sport, and for me, it would be nice if the team captains, Strauss and Inzamam, were to sit down, and work out a solution between them, as it seems that the I.C.C. are being as toothless as ever...
and I feel that it's a real shame that such a well-fought series has been marred by this controversy.

An intriguing contest, I reckon England may have held on or rain come to their aid. But it was all ruined by an umpire who wanted to be the centre of attraction, an already proven racist and a cheat.
Ironically there is no bad feeling between the two teams, just the Pakistan team and the little Hitler umpire.
England won the other tests fair and square, they did not need a 'twelfth man' in the form of Hair, the series was already won.

Unfortunately the Pakistanis did not help themselves at all. Refusing to come out once the umpires went to them 20 minutes after the scheduled start and asked them whether they intended to carry on was eminently foolish. Then their representative did not help matters by saying a load of stuff that was either inaccurate or inflammatory, e.g. 'the ball had been clattered around and several sixes hit off it' - actually only 1 six had been hit with that ball - the majority of the KP onslaught came off the replacement.... 'the boys decided to stay in the dressing room just for a few minutes to protest'... they stayed in there a full 20 minutes, were asked if they were coming out then failed to emerge in the further 10 mins it took the umpires and the batsmen to get out and wait another 2 mins before declaring the game forfeit.... 'we are willing to play now (an hour later) and this demonstrates we want to put the matter behind us...' by that stage it was not for pakistan to put the matter behind them... they had conceded not only the game at that stage, but also the moral high ground. As soon as they refused to play after being allowed their 20 minutes of protest, there was no other decision open to the umpires, and God bless them for sticking to their guns.

In my opinion, play should have resumed when Pakistan eventually took the field. Who suffered for the lost overs? Pakistan - every over lost made a drawn match more attainable for England.
Let them make their point and get on with the game - it's England that suffered and they're the blameless ones.

The bottom line is that you can't have a team dictating terms to the umpires. There are plenty of other avenues to persue grievances. To preserve the integrity of the sport, one has to back the umpires.
