Slide rules were used for quick multiplication, division, exponents, logaritms, etc. before the handheld calculator was invented. They were usually made out of an ivory veneer over wood. The Apollo Program that landed a man on the moon was accomplished almost without computers, but rather with slide rules.

It's a calculator. I used to use one on my job before calculators came out. First calculator I ever saw was Texas Instrument for $125.00. If you know of anyone who still has one ask them for a demonstration. I think you would be very fascinated.
