I've found a list of the top colleges in America, is there one for visual art schools? I think I've seen it, but I can't find it now.

It depends on your discipline.

Cooper Union is free if you can get in to it.

Most of the other schools listed are bloated--expensive. Really think about it before going if you don't have the way to pay for it. It's not worth a lot of student loan debt over. Go to a community college the first 2 years and transfer to a name brand art school. Not only is it going to be cheaper, but when you transfer you will have all your basic liberal arts classes out of the way and you can take all studio classes, which is why you are paying big bucks in the first place.

I went to 2 name brand art schools and I wish I had been smart enough to start at a CC. Paying back student loans with something as nebulous as a painting degree is tough. I don't have any reqrets, just wish I had been smarter about it.

Hunter College in NYC has now made it on the top 3 Schools for MFA on the east coast. If you want to do sculpture, Virginia Commonwealth University has been voted #1 this year.

There are also SVA (School of Visual Arts - NYC), Pratt Institute (NYC), Savanna College of Art and Design (SCAD - Georgia)...

Your decision should be based on what type of art you'd like to study- if you want animation or computer art, illustration, fine arts, graphic design...most schools have strengths in some departments and weaknesses in others...do more research - but first look at what you want to do. also look at where you want to live and what you can afford! Good luck - art school rocks!!
