It really, really depends on what sort of car. If the engine is mounted sideways, such as a Mitsubishi Eclipse, it's going to be a real pain. If the engine runs front to back, like a pickup truck, it is often just a matter of swapping in a rear wheel drive transmission and removing the front drivetrain (or, in most trucks, you're better off swapping in the front suspension from a 2WD). The exception to that rule is Subarus - they moun the engine front to back, but you won't find a rear wheel drive transmission for one all that easily.

on some vehicles you can just take out the front drive shaft that way if want to make it back in to all again you just but it back in
