MIAMI -- Friday's game between the Marlins and Braves saw a scary moment, as home-plate umpire Jerry Layne was taken off the field on a stretcher during the eighth inning after being struck in the side of the face by the barrel of Hanley Ramirez's bat, which broke as the shortstop hit a grounder to second base.
Layne remained conscious as he lay on the field for several minutes while doctors attended to him.
"I heard the bat hit the ball, and then as soon as it went behind me, I knew," Braves catcher Brian McCann said. "It smacked harder than the ball hitting the bat. I just hope that [Layne is] OK."
Fortunately, an X-ray after the game showed Layne only suffered a bruised jaw. He is expected to be available for Saturday's game.
Braves manager Bobby Cox said he's seen the number of broken bats go up lately, and it's becoming more dangerous.
"I hope Jerry is OK," Cox said. "Those bats are breaking at an alarming rate. They're going in the stands a lot. You can't see them. There's no way to get out of the way."
The game was delayed 13 minutes following Layne's injury, and second-base umpire Mark Wegner moved behind home plate upon the resumption of play.
Layne escaped with a bruised jaw when the barrel of a shattered bat hit him in the side of the head. He departed on a stretcher loaded onto a cart, but X-rays were negative, and he was on his feet in the umpire's locker room after the game.

I was at that game and it was scary in the stadium at first because nobody knew what happened. Hanley Ramirez hit a ground ball so nobody watched the ump. All of a sudden every one ran to the area where Layne fell, and they called the medical cart. Funny part of this story: I was in Miami, but I had to call my best friend at home in Erie PA to find out what happened 200 feet from where I was sitting.

If that's the ump who was struck by a shattered piece of a bat; that last report I heard was he's doing fine. They had to take him off in a stretcher but that was more precaustionary than anything else.
Google "MLB" for more info.
