I have a bad problem. First, i receive a good amount of money, promise myself to save it and only spend a certain amount, then head off to the mall and spend everything!! sometimes im sucessful in saving at least half, but when i get bored i blow my money on little things just to buy something. how can i stop this wasteful pattern?

You need to get some activities. A sport, exercise, gardening, crafts, whatever.

Buying stuff is a way to create an impression in your mind of an activity without actually going to the trouble of doing anything.

Sometimes I am tempted to buy fishing gear. I already have fishing gear.

When I am out on the river fishing, I don't feel tempted to buy anything because I am doing what I would be buying the stuff to do.

When I am at work and I want to be fishing, I am tempted to buy a new rod or something like that.

If I would just be patient and wait till I am not at work, I could get the pleasure of fishing without wasting my money.

Place this money where it is far less liquid, like getting a savings account but refuse the ATM card or debit card. This way you never have quick access to the money. You could also try a certificate of deposit depending on the amount available to save. Often these accounts have a minimum balance, but they reuire you to keep funds on deposit for a certain period of months or years. You have to pay a penalty to withdraw early. Keep reminders and motivators for whatever cause you are saving for. Don't deprive yourself entirely of the money. Determine an appropriate amount to indulge, and create a shopping list before you head out to the mall or other stores. I try to keep in mind certain items that are most useful, and I also set for myself a price threshhold for the value of the item. For instance, I want a pair of jeans, but I won't let myself spend more than $30.

get rid of your credit cards. try automatically putting money into an account through direct deposit through work. make it difficult for you by not getting a check card and banking the old fashion way. that way, you can withdraw a certain amount and having to go into a bank will deter you from spending any more.
