I am looking for monologue and song selections for a college student that is just getting into acting. I am not his same type so I don't have anything readily available. Does anyone have any ideas for a general audition package? I'm thinking a comic/dramatic and a classical/contemporary package with a couple of songs. Thanks for your help!

Hi Guy
I am not sure what a Huck fin type is exactly but I agree that the song next to lovin I like fightin from big river is great, The male character from our town might also be a good fit for a monologue that's serious. I personally like the song dancing through life from Wicked as a performance piece also.

It depends on the kind of productions you are looking at going into. If you are looking at Comedy, use some comedic monologues. Drama, use a piece which gives you material to work with to show a wide variety of emotional tones. Musical theatre shows are dependent upon style and period. For a Huck Finn type I would suggest Big River. The musical is about Huck Finn. Recently revived on Broadway. Also study your work.

Harold and Maude is a good piece for a young man. For classical, it's hard to top the part of Romeo.

"Corner of the Sky" from Pippin is nice. For a more contemporary musical, Rent or Hairspray might offer something suitable.
