If the child dose not have a medical problem and the parent is stuffing the child with junk food then yes I would say it is a form of abuse, if the parent becomes defencive when asked about the child's eating problem then the child's problem would stem from the parent, In many cases the parent will have low self esteem and be vary insecure, when a person feels unloved they see themselves as something ugly someone that can't be loved, so there emotions run away on them and their actions can lead to a number of bizarre activities. the person definitely needs counselling for herself and her child.

It is abuse but not as we know it. Unfortunately only the courts can decide what is fit an non fit. Though it may be disturbing to watch a parent allow all the health problems that are associated with obesity occur there is not a whole lot that we can do about it at this point but try and educate that parent on the harm the inadvertently are causing.

Yes, I think it may be. I have taught kids like this. One of them would say nasty things to the other kids and when the others would call him "fat" in one way or the other, he would get mad and sulk or cry. His mother was outraged, yet she let's him SNACK on KFC--a dinner box! Aside from the terrible health problems they face, these parents don't realize what kind of effect it will have on their social lives nor do they know just how hard it is to lose the weight and keep it off later in life. This mother doesn't want to be a mother; she wants to be her friend. I don't know what DHS could do since their plate is so full. How about writing to Dr. Phil? If they're picked, he might set up counseling for both.

You can't do anything to save the kids life. I don't think it could really be punishable by law, like child abuse, but it is sick and horrible parenting. The mother should get a backbone and show the child how to eat right and be healthy.

This is an extreme case. I do think your neighbour is abusing her kid because she is endagering her child's wellbeing.
Since her mother doesn't know any better... offer to babysit for a while and maybe take the girl to the park and run around with her for a while or play ball.

its technically not abuse, but she is killing her child. you could call child protective services, but im not sure whether they can do anything. research a lot of statistics about severley obese ppl and children, and show them to her(the mom). show her the most traumatic and scary ones you can find. explain to her that she is ruining her childs life by living this way. get her to change her daughters eating habits and to get her to exercise. even walking for as long as she can will make a dramatic difference. help the little gorl while you can.

It's not technically abusive, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do somthing to help. Your neighbor obviously doesn't understand the danger of being that overweight. If you are friendly with your neighbor, try inviting her and her daughter out for a walk or a jog or somthing.

On some level it's abuse. If the child has a medical problem
that's another matter.
