The British government at the time was using the colonies as a way to get rich, at the expense of the colonists. The colonists didn't see where they were getting anything back from their government. In fact, they concluded they were there to work so the goevernment could suck all the profit without giving anything at all in return. They got fed up, revolted, and the rest is history.

A few things come to mind:
1) In order to curb French expansion, the British made promises to the Indians to curb colonial expansion.
2) The British economic system, as experienced by George Washington and other land wealthy owners of the South, ran like this:
You as a colonist send your crops and other raw goods to your British business representative. He credits your account from which you can ask your representative to purchase items.
Often times you get only a fraction of the value of what you send, and in return you often get poorly made goods. This made many colonists not only mad but also in debt to the British, something the British claim was a reason to get out of debt by rebelling. George Washington was against this and thought debts to the British should be honored (as a matter of honor).
3) The colonists did not need the British as much as they did in the past in terms of protection.
4)They did not like the idea every time Europe got into a war, they had to join in.

Aside from unfair taxation and insufficent representation in Parliament, the colonists felt that they were being treated like second hand citizens of England. Also some of the wealthier colonists, like George Washington, felt slighted in trade deals with England.

Americans are strong headed and will pick a fight no matter what.
I could be president and say, everyone can have whatever they want and never have to work again, and there would be a bunch of Americans shouting and hollaring that I am a facist, a communist, a pig, undemocratic, unamerican, and racist.
That, and early Americans (Puritains) came to North America in search for freedom (both religious and political) so they did not want to be governed by a country across an ocean.

It had to do with the fact that they had no say in their own government. The British Parliment was deciding laws and taxes with out giving the colonies representation.
