In my half century on this planet, I've found my view of what I hear from my children has changed. Sure, they say they love me, whenever I talk to them, but at my age, I begin to wonder about my accomplishes in life. On New Year's night, my first born called me to say that she had been Googling my name. She knew I had done some things in my life, but after seeing all the hits, she called me to say how proud she was to be my daughter.

When your children give you something, for your birthday or Father's Day, do you prefer something sentimental that shows their love for you, or would you rather hear from them "why" they appreciate you?

Obviously the children's answers above this are not over 40,
It is interesting that you have good things about you in "google" It is good just to have kids that care to keep in touch ,I don't get things just usually a card, and thats ok I don't need things . I prefer a visit.

This is such a hard question! I'm not a man but I feel compelled to answer anyway, I am a woman over 40!! Being loved is wonderful and we all want to be loved but being appreciated and having our accomplishments acknowledged by someone we love is a great feeling. This being said, I still feel that to know that I am truly loved by my children would be more gratifying for me.

well i am certainly not a dad, but i will give a thought from a daughter's perspective. i am 27 years old and i find it very much necessary to tell my dad i love him whenever i get the chance. all that is very important. b/c whether someone has done something monumental in the eyes of society or simply a smaller gesture toward their own child...it's monumental to us. so telling someone how you feel about them is so very important. i know this as my mom is not emotional towards me at all and i rarely have ever heard she loves me in my whole life upon this earth. my dad left and had various issues...but he's the one i'm closest too. that lifts me up most. that, i feel, loves me most. whether that's true who knows...but it's in the love that you find those answers.

thanks for the post. it is much needed and very interesting.

Both would be the absolute best because then you would feel loved and appreciated at the same time. It is hard to just choose one or the other, because both have pros and cons, but if i had my choice, i would prefer something of sentimental value that shows their love because to me, that is the sweetest gift in life.

All I want is an acknowledgement as to who I am and what i have tried to do.

A little of both would be the best. Something is better than nothing.

at my age, its nice to hear i love you from the grown kids.
its nice that they remember my birthday, mothers day, etc.

its great to hear that they appreciate me for what i do and what i did and gave up to give them what they needed.

thats the main thing. usually i like things that they pick out because it reminds them of me and they think that i will like it. not what they think is expected.

There's no age limit on being gratified when someone loves and appreciates you and knowing that it's genuinely meant.
