France, Anatole ( pseudonym of Jacques-Anatole-François Thibault) was a French novelist considered the ideal French man of letters. He was elected to the French Academy in 1896 and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921.

Anatole France, if you can, read The Crime of Sylvester Bonnard. it is a good book about self sacrifice and charity.
